If you want to truly succeed as a musician or singer then being able to recognize note intervals, chords and rhythms automatically by ear will be of tremendous benefit to you. The skill of being able to instantly recognize these notes and rhythms is known as ear training and anyone can be proficient at it with professional training. In the early days ear training was available on tapes and CD’s but the quality was questionable. The good news is that these programs have improved dramatically and there are some very good ear training programs on the Internet.

Ear Training

So what is ear training? The chief objective of any ear training program is the instant recognition of relative pitch. Having perfect pitch means that you can understand and automatically detect intervals between notes in music. Taking this to another level is the mastering of perfect pitch. Perfect pitch gives you the ability to predict how notes should sound in your mind without the need to hear them being played. The skill of perfect pitch has been mastered by a lot of musicians and it enables them to pick out notes in infinite detail very easily.

Conventional music training will encourage the trainee to learn how to read music and the technical skills required to play the instrument of their choice with no focus on ear training. Ear training skills should never be neglected and the trainee should be aware that the ability to master music by ear will likely mean that they will become very superior musicians. In fact it is fair to say that those musicians that have not undergone ear training will be at a major disadvantage. A musician that has good ear training skills can pick up the instrument of their choice and immediately start playing with any group of musicians.

Ear Training

With good aural training you will be able to join another band with no problem or even decide to start your own band. The benefit of good ear training here is that once you have acquired the skill you will be able to follow along immediately with anything that the band is playing. You will know instantly the chords that are being played as well as the key that the music is being played in once you have mastered ear training. You will certainly have arrived as a musician once you get to this level. Also by learning the skill of relative pitch you will be able to tell if you are in tune with the rest of the band or not.

It is very useful if you are singing to master relative pitch as it will help you sing the notes that you see very well. It is also very useful for composers who through their ear training can create harmonies and melodies in their heads and then commit them to paper or play them on their chosen instrument.

If you want to truly succeed as a professional musician then it is very important that you get high quality ear training to develop your aurul skills. The ability to play it by ear is a truly remarkable skill where you can create whole musical pieces in your head. In short, every musician no matter what instrument or input to music that they provide needs professional ear training to really take their musical skills to the next level.
